Property Rites was an exciting challenge, as apart of the two CalArts’ Performance Series shows that I designed. The shows went up in rep, and could not have been more different. This show called for a distinctly artificial and mechanical soundscape. I approached the design primarily as ambience, creating subtle synth tones that would creep in and out throughout the show. Within that, I also approached it a bit like cinema, with tones coming more to the forefront during times of tension and fear. The sci fi sound palette was created primarily with synthesizers, but also utilized distorted field recordings. It proved an exciting new challenge for my design skills.
